Wildflower Meadow

Natural landscaping with wildflowers and native grasses improves the environment and increases our connection to nature by attracting diverse varieties of songbirds, pollinators and butterflies.

The Hendrick Foundation Garden wildflower meadow has been grown from Claybusters, a custom seed mix which delivers 22 wildflower varieties and three different native grasses, which will bloom at varying times throughout the spring and summer. The Hendrick Foundation has been following the seeding and care methodology provided by a local wildflower seed supplier, Wildflower Farm.

The seeds were planted in Fall 2021, and covered in hay for the winter. In the spring of 2022, the wildflower seedlings began to germinate and emerge as the soil warmed up. In the first summer, the meadow had to be mowed to 6 inches every few weeks, which allowed the wildflowers to devote their energy to growing strong roots and shoots rather than flowers and seeds.

In summers to come, the wildflowers will emerge quickly in the spring and grow much faster and larger. The birds and the bees will reap the rewards as the meadow will enjoy a dense, diverse mix of colourful wildflowers from spring through late fall and no further mowing will be required.
